Censorship Tools Used for Censorship

Russell Brandom at the Verge reports that “Tools designed to fight trolls are being used to crack down on dissent,” or, as I like to put it, “Tools designed to silence people are being used to silence people.”

This is why we’re supposed to be expansive about freedom of speech.  Because it turns out that when you legitimize censorship (even non-governmental censorship, even democratic censorship, even censorship of genuinely worthless people holding genuinely abhorrent positions), it turns out that people get censored.
